Default thoughts on in ground lifts?

looking ahead to my dream garage. it will have a lift, maybe 2. i know you can get a nice above ground lift for under $2k. no idea what one like the pic above might cost.

seems like it would kick *** especialy when your not using it. hardly in the way at all. the negatives i see are it has to be expensive and i dont know if you can park under the lifted car, posts might be too close together to fit a 2nd car under it. there are other brands and maybe they have wider spaced posts.

anyone have any experience to share?

stay away from inground lifts because if they leak then you have problems with the epa and i think its a minimum 25k fine for leaking lifts thats why alot of service centers no longer use them.

the entire unit is self contained in a big plastic enclosure. if it leaks it will just be messy but wont leak into the dirt. they say the lid is water tight too so you can still wash off your floor.

I've seen one that rolls under the car, and can be folded up along side the wall for storage. Don't remember who makes it tho.

.

Not a fan for the house, I would prefer not such a permanent item.
I'm actually leaning towards the 4 post with wheels for my new shop.
It's just so damn big when not in use, I've been going nuts trying to decide.

As for the fold up ones, if it's the same ones I see around here. It's not very good for what we do. It blocks the trans, exhaust, ect.

i have a 7000 lb rotary lift in my garage-it has the vertical on both sides, and the arms swing under the car-i built my garage with sissiors trusses in the one bay just for that, and added extra concrete also-i bought it from a repair shop that went out of business
it has the cables that run over the top, rather than under a plate on the floor, which is nice if you roll a trans jack around
i do a lot of classic car restoration, and its great for lifting the body off frames, trans work, detailing etc-if you ever move, it can be unbolted
for guys that dont have garage headroom, you can pour a pad outside, and mount one that way

I have a 4 post rotary in my garage and its great but its big. That underground unit would be bad *** UNTIL it breaks and then youll wish you had a above ground unit

Very, very rarely do you see new in ground lifts in shops. For a reason. Or many reasons.
Cost to install, cost to repair, possible EPA hazards, etc.

that is a unique design. but i think almost everyone that had in ground lift has had bad experience with them leaking. every time they leak you had to dig them out. i have a two post abov e ground. i really like it it as i use it every single day in the shop. if above ground get one that has no floor plate. make trans installs a lot easier.

Yeah I've mbeen doing some inten se research on this subject too. Besides the leak hazard, there is also the dissadvantage of being able to work on it.

No you cannot get another car under it. But after having worked with an in ground lift for the last 2 years.....I would never want an above ground.

Default above ground definatly

I am the oppisite. I have been a GM tech for 10 years now and had in grounds for the first 4 years. Hated them. Only good thing is that you can work on doors and such up off the ground. I have a 10k wide twin post in my garage and it works great for everything. Especially having the clear floor for doing tranny work or dropping a motor out the bottom. Just mu opinion. G

it seems like it would make it a tad bit more difficult to drivetrain work. And like we need any more obstacles working on our cars

I'm another owner of a four post and love it. I can move it with the supplied castors, even with the car on it, in the down position. I'd prefer if the runners were just an inch or so further apart, but it's fine for just about anything I want to do under the car.
