Default Storage Lift Recommendation?

Buying a new house, wanted one w/ a 4-car garage for all 4 of my vehicles (2 "summer only" cars and 2 "year-round" cars). Found a great deal on a house w/ a 3-car that my wife loves, and we agreed if I was going to "suffer" in a 3-car house it would have to have a garage deep and tall enough to swallow a storage lift so I can store my summer cars stacked in the winter and still not have to scrape windows on my winter beater. Given that, been checking out Eagle lifts and their GLO-70 (7000 lb capacity) appears to be a great deal, it also has optional sliding jacks that'll allow break/wheel work. Just wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a better deal / other manufacturer / or why I should stay away from Eagle lifts.

TIA

Not sure about the eagle brand lifts, but I went with a Direct Lift, Pro Park 8s. It has quite a few nice features that some of the other cheaper lifts dont have. The runways for example are one peice units instead of having the l-bends welded on. Check out www.Gregsmithequipment.com for other models that are available. They have another model identical to the one I got that goes almost a foot higher in case you wanted to park an SUV or truck under it.

I also went with the greg smith pro park 8s (and posted about it in The Alchemist's other thread). There is a greg smith in Indiana. I got mine at their Delaware location.

Less than $2000 depending on how high you want to go. I went with the shorter of the two models. I can get the runways to 5'11" off the ground and the taller one goes a foot higher.

I think the rolling jack is a must have accessory though. I'm probably gonna opt for the higher one after I do some measuring.

Does the caster kit add any height to the lift?

The caster kit only stays on when you move the lift. You put them on, lower the lift all the way down, and the wheels cause the posts to raise up about a half inch off the floor.

The rolling jack would be nice, but I just jacked the car up while it was on the ground and still on the runways, and put the rear on jack stands on the runways, to work on my wheels. There is a jacking tray to use a conventional floor jack. I didn't try it though.

Thanks for the feedback. I checked out Gregsmithequipment and will probably go w/ their PP-8S lift, ~$1700 and it comes w/ 3 drip trays, jack bridge and caster kit (the Eagle lift didn't include the drip trays). I'll also get a sliding jack too. 2 things sold me on the Greg Smith unit is the adjustable stop positions (needed to take maximum advantage of the limited ceiling height for storage of 2 vehicles) and their Indy location (should be cheaper for shipping, or may rent a U-Haul to pick-up myself). It's also rated 8,000 lbs vs 7,000 for the same-priced Eagle unit.

It's going to be a tight squeeze in my garage, will probably have to adjust the garage door opener open-stop position to make sure it doesn't bang the back bumper of the car on top while I park my other car underneath. Cant wait to get 'er done!

Did you install or how much for the install? Putting the studs in the concrete must of sucked.

You can rent a hammer drill for like 60 bucks a day.
Then you drill the concrete and install thunder studs or anchors.
Really not to bad.

A 4-post lift does not need to be bolted down (but you can if you want to). Most of them come w/ caster kits that allows you to move it around, can't do that w/ it bolted down. 2-post lifts are a different story, need at least 6" of 3000psi rated slab to bolt those down (more if it's rated above ~8,000lbs).

Depends on how high you need to lift one car to park another under it. Need to allow ~ 7-8" + the height of both cars. Most lifts have locks every 4", but as I mentioned locks are adjustable +/- 2" on the Greg Smith PP-8S lift. Also, if you intend to stack your cars, need to be sure your garage is deep enough so that the overhead door doesn't smack the rear bumper of the car on top when you open it to park the car underneath.

I have a 10' garage ceiling and was wandering if this will be enough room?

My ceiling is currently 9.5 feet, but it is a false ceiling if you want to call it that. There is nothing above it and I'm going to open it up, and put a loft in part of it and leave the rest of it open above the car so I can park another car under it.

Yeah really. What good is a lift if you can't stand up under the car.

You can see the schematics of the lifts on their website. For the 8s:

http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/do...stallation.pdf

The bottom of the runways is 5'8 at full extension, but the runways are 4 inches tall so the car tires bottoms will be at 6 foot at full extension so add the height of your car to 6 foot to determine how much clearance you will have overhead.

It's still easier to work on a car at 5 foot in the air than it is on jackstands. You can use a mechanics chair to roll around under the car. Still way easier to change oil, pull exhausts, etc. and still be able to use the car for storage.
