Default Completed the carhauler

Figured I would post some pics of the completed Car hauler I built this winter. Its now on the road ready to go.

Total length 40' 6"
Deck 33'2"
Empty weight 4,180 lbs
GVWR 14,000

Did you wire weld the whole thing? Flux core?

Yeah, I Mig welded it with my Miller 252

Already hauled 2 cars this week..

Looks awsome. Was going to ask if you MIGed it or stick welded that but you aready answered that question. If you don't mind me asking, on those vertical beads did you weld them up hill or down hill? Not downplaying it or anything, just some constructive critisism. Nice trailer but I do a lot of structrual welding and have always been taught to NEVER go downhill, its not exactly desireable for penetration. Correct me if I'm wrong but the welds where your gussets meet your 5th wheel appear to be down hill.

They are uphill. It actually was a little hairy as I did it on a windy day as well. (im on an island with no LWS) So without fluxcore, I had my friend hold some plywood they were coming out like ****. So I pulsed it going up a little at a time, between wind gusts.

I do structural stick welding too, but my bobcat was off Island so I miged it.

Down hill is a no no, except for sheetmetal imho.

Cool, yeah. I realized they were uphill after getting on a better computer screen. I dig it, if you don't mind me asking about how much do you have in it?

Just under 4 grand, but it's just how I wanted it, I saw some real cheaply made ones, for $5500 so I think I came out ahead...

That's nice work. Did you buy blue prints to work from, or just take some measurements and have at it? How about to spots mounted on up on the goose neck as work lights for loading and unloading, maybe even double as reverse lights?

Thanks, I designed it myself. No blueprints. I made it just long enough for 2 f bodies, and wide enough for most vehicles.

I left several places to tap in for lights, as of right now, there isnt a need. I still have to get my Camaro back on the road first...

FWIW, all neck gussets by trailer fab. shops are welded out downhill with 70 series wire, they never break.

that thing is awesome. makes me finally want to go out and build my own. MY size c-channel is that? 5" tall 1/4" thick?

6" x 10.5 lb Which is .303" I think, a little under 3/8ths its fairly thick. Then there is a 3'' x 1/4 flat strip welded under that, tied into the 3"x 4.1 lb crossbraces, which are doubled up.

Nice looking trailer! How did you determine where to position the axles? How balanced is it with two cars loaded and hooked up to your 1 ton? Does your truck sag a lot?

I only have a 3/4 ton, but with airbags @55 psi, it barely sags at all, the truck is actually still nose down by alot.

As far as axle position, I looked at a friend of mines bumper pull 2 car, and moved them back about 3 ft for more pin weight. This trailer likes alot of pin weight, the more the better. It rides beautifully when it has about 2200 lbs on the pin, which is both cars as forward as possible.
