Default Braided Hose....

Is there a tool that makes putting fittings on a steel braided hose easier? 8AN goes on pretty easy but the 6an stuff is kickin my ****. Cant get the screw caps on over the steel braid to even begin. Someone had to have invented something.

Most techs will put tape around the hose where they plan to cut it, so that the braids do not fray out.

if you think 6AN is a pain... try 4AN. I will NEVER make another 4AN line.

We put electrical tape around ours then cut it in the middle of the tape. It kept the fraying to a minimum.

Electrical tape works the best. Just cut down the middle. I just did some -4, -6 and -8 last night no problem. If you do the tape right, as your twisting it will start to peel off and come out of the cap. Another thing to try is to hold the fitting with a wrench and grab a fist full of hose then turn. It seems to like a little force to get it into the fittings easier.

Wrap the tape as tightly as you can, too...

Can someone tell me if there is a fitting that will go from a plain/flared end of tubing to AN ftg? For example, tapping into the trans cooler lines to run braided hoses to an aftermarket cooler.

Thanks

IslandTahoe, they make those. My shop gets all their fittings from aeroquip. We use alot of flared to tubing connectors for all kinds of marine applications.

Is that the name of the connector "flare to tubing"? Still can't find what the adapter or fitting is called.

Your help is appreciated.

Actually I think they are inverted flare(flared end of tubing) to 37 degree flare (-an fitting). I won't know the official term until I go back to the shop monday.

Sorry it took so long. I went through all our fittings and there is two that sound like what you are describing. One is inverted flare to flare(this is the -an end) and the other is compression to flare. The flare end is actually a 37* flared male end, it is a male -an fitting.

So I'm clear, a tube flare is a different angle than a AN flare.

1) Tube flare to AN flare looks something like:
tube--< <--> >--braided
2) Compression ftg to AN flare looks something like:
tube--- ]--> >--braided

Is this the right picture?

Thanks for the help.

The only difference in angles I know of is whether you get SAE or JIC fittings. Even then the only two that are not compatible with each other is -6an & -12an. All the others will work with each other.

Island Tahoe ... go to Hydro Air (Hydra Air) down near the airport (it's two streets over from Nimitz). They have nearly every fitting you can imagine. Believe me, I put them to the test while I was there many times
