i have been thinking of building something like a display rack but maybe just big enough to allow you to sit up under your car. the cross braces holding the two sides would need to unbolt for storage purposes. i know someone has to have something like this at home.

I have a mid raise lift from Greg Smith ind. and it works great. plus it is portable and raises the car 42" off the ground. quick and easy. It was cheap to under 1580.00 delivered.

There are some scary stuff through out this thread. From 2x4's, to 6 jacks stand and 40's of lift, to the fork lift. I can only shake my head and wonder.

I haven't found a easy way yet with out a lift but for basic stuff I pull my car on my open center car trailer. But as far as dropping the engine I use jack stands under the car on all 4 sides and raise the front/ set the jack stands ,raise the back /set the jack stands, raise the front with wood under the stands , raise the back with wood under the stands , raise the front with wood under the jack cause the 3 ton jacked maxed out then keep going around till I get the height where I want it. I can get it high enough to roll the complete K-member with the wheels on under the front air dam with out touching. But my car is so high in my garage that my hood open almost touches the ceiling. I can't wait for the day I have a lift but I'm making due with jack stands and a 3 ton jack for now. Just about any project can be done on the car trailer except dropping the engine from under neith. I also have a steel plates to make sections of the car trailer floor solid so jack stands can be used and still have open access.

it's nice to have a lift, but they take up space, so I'm constantly trying to find ways to get the cars up off the ground to work on them. When i dropped my engine out the bottom, i used a combination of rhino ramps and four jackstands to get the car off the ground. I wouldn't mind a good stand/lift made of wood. Wood is plenty strong as it supports the home I'm in now and many others i've lived in . like anything else, it just has to be used correctly and the same goes for steel.

I know a 4 post is not cheap, but it is sweet. If you have a "regular" ceiling height, just don't send the car quite so high. It still makes it great to work under.

I love my ProPark 8 that I got from Greg Smith eq. Before I lofted my ceiling, the height was ~9.5' and I was able to get my t/a ~ 4-5 feet in the air which was plenty of room to swap the clutch/flywheel at the time. I simply sat on a rolling stool while working.

Granted, now that the ceiling is lofted, and I have 12 feet of head room, I wish I went with the taller lift because I could store my wifes SUV under it, but hingsight is 20:20.
Currently, I store my t/a during winter months and park my sedan daily driver under it and it's got plenty of room and it's easier using a 4 post than a two post for storing a vehicle.

Here it is before I lofted the ceiling.

And here it is after:

mmm..... 4 post lift........ I need a couple of those. Never thought about having my garage ceiling lofted, that is a great idea!! Way to make a two car garage into a three car garage That wood block setup however look like a lot of work. I just use some concrete foundation blocks under the wheels and a floor jack to get it there. They can hold the weight and are easy to move and store. I always have spare jack stands setup under any car when I work on even if I don't feel like there is a chance in needing them. I also shake the hell out of it before I will go under it. If it falls at least it is not on meA buddy's grandpa died when his 57' slipped off its supports, so take it seriously.
