Arn't most if not all boiler tubes carbon steel? No reason to use inconel rod. A short 7018 boiler rod is what I have always heard they use.

Im with the both of you..

for your info i have hundreds of welds in dozens of countries that are all currently still in service in the field. your gasoline in your car is there partly bc of me. all the big oil companies use our products to run their refinieries. and no i dont climb around on the floor to weld but thats your business what you decide to do with your welding career.

Yea I hear ya.. I use to work for Cianbro Corp 10 years and did a lot of work for Air Products welding on their chillers. Its nothing more fun than welding on the floor 4" inches off the ground. Better yet hanging from the ceiling attached to a harness and lanyard..Everything I welded on had to be 100% x-rayed! I kinda miss that work.

I have used 309 or Cronatron 333 countless times to join mild to stainless. I have never had any issues. I have used these same rods to weld different types of tool steel together. Incidentally these were used in metal stamping dies at 1000+ tons of force.

never used that cronatron 333 wire. How does it weld? Is it similar to Hastalloy? Or is a stainless alloy?

No, use the Inconel rod. Always use the more noble alloy when joining two materials together.

Inconel is used for dissimilar metal joining alot, but it is costly. 309 is a much cheaper alternative, and is used mostly to attain an acceptable ferrite number in the diluted weld metal. Other rods could be used, yes, but as mentioned, alot of the boilers are joined using 309 and do fine. I have seen a few switch to Inconel or nickel-based fillers though.
