Logging in for the first time in ~8 hrs, I read a single PM, then go back to click on New Posts. Only one new post. I would be highly surprised to see only 1 new post in 8 hours. Broken logic somewhere?

One new post since you read the PM.

Try clicking the find new posts button before checking your PMs next time

When does it reset the counter? I thought it meant 'New posts since your last login'.

That's exactly what it means. But you're logging in, and then committing another action by reading the PM. Resetting the clock.

cheers,

Logging in is when the system accepts my password. I do not logout after reading my PM's, thus I am still logged in, and my previous login would still have been ~8hrs ago. Thus it is not 'new posts since last login'... might as well name it 'new posts since the last time I clicked any link on this website'. Why is it designed like that?

Because it's not actually tied to the act of logging in. It's tied to the cookie for 'bblastactivity'. Which, is the act of reading the PM in your scenario.

If you must read your new PMs before scanning for new posts, I suggest opening your private messages in a new tab, an then clicking 'view new posts' from the original tab.

cheers,
robb

To answer this specific question, you have 30 minutes between your last activity and the time your session will expire. After 30 minutes of inactivity, you are considered inactive and New Post status, as well as last visit date, are reset/updated. I believe default was 15-20 minutes.

To be able to read all your posts since your last login, you will need to keep active to reset that counter before 30 minutes expire since your last activity. Doing what Robb suggests would also avoid this.
