Default search engine sucks. it *needs* to be improved

I know I am not the only one with such an opinion..

What is the projected timeframe on getting rid of this search "engine" on this board, and replacing it with something that works?

As it is, the search feature is not very useful.

As an example, I enter "5.3L" and try to search internal engine section. no results?? yeah right, i believe that
search for "5.3L heads" yields completely irrelevant results, and only seems to take into account the "heads" portion of the search.

I'd like to find information on why use 5.3L heads instead of 5.7L heads. What the advantages are. Pros and cons. There is NO way to do it, unless you want to sift through completely irrelevant threads for hours trying to piece together the search "results" thats this site gives..

I love the site, it has TONS of info - but this search thing needs to be scrapped, forgotten, and started anew. Really.

try something more than 5.3l heads... there are thousands of posts about them

the search engine works amazingly, IF you know how to use it.

your search terms are way to broad with something so common. you could probalby find that info within the first 3 pages of the internal section as its posted quite often too..

5.3 is a generic and very very widely used term. Use something like 5.3 comparison...

for a quick bit of info... the chambers are smaller = more compression

I agree. That's why when I can't find something in search I start a new thread. I don't know if there is much you can do about it. Try to revise what you put in and you will get diferent results. Sometimes you get lucky.

the search engine shall not require a users manual to go with it.
do not mean to sound rude - but if a user cannot come in, do a search on what he needs and find RELEVANT results then the search engine sucks.
period.

look at google. do you need to type in the whole 50 state names into google, as well as all states' mayor names JUST to find out wtf is the largest city in the USA is?

searching should be transparent.
period.

A search engine cannot read your mind to figure out what you REALLY mean Google, by far the best search engine EVER, does a good job of guessing on some very detailed and unique terms (ie. math results, ups/fedex/etc. tracking info, etc.) but it still has to match keywords for everything else. You have to feed it an intelligent set of search parameters, ESPECIALLY when looking on a very focused website such as LS1Tech. Try typing in 5.3L into Google, do you think those results are better?

hint: to search LS1Tech using Google, enter this at google.com: site:www.ls1tech.com 5.3L heads

If you have some source code or some proven algorithms on how to make search read a person's mind, please share. I'll be the next billionaire internet mogul

It could use some enhancements. If you do an advanced search such as "temperature sender" you will get every post with "sender" and "temperature" in it. Would be nice if you could , for example, put quotes around "temperature sender" so only posts with the whole phrase would be returned.

Everyone stop whining and leave Brains alone so he can make better use of his time and move to the new server. Just use Google as suggested above and posted prior to this. This site is free, has much data and they are working to make it faster while leaving old data in place and NOT archived.

I have used the search many times and sometimes it works sometimes well not so good. The problem I have is with some of the people on the board.I cringe when I can't find something in search because I know if I ask a question that was gone over a year ago some people get so rude about it.Some people are new to this board and computers in general.(me).

Some folks get rude or a little pissy when things have been gone over a million times -- which unfortunately is often when search will be a little less than ideal. A good example are the infamous "best catback" and "what's the best cam for me?" threads that pop up all the time On some subjects searching will only teach you so much -- and you'll need to spend quite a lot of time reading through some lengthy threads. Again, cam choice comes up. There's a LOT of things we still don't know and have discussions about over and over, and many times even the old hats learn new things. Don't be afraid to post questions, as long as you've "done the homework" to make sure its not something trivial that's been answered many times. Look at the top of the forum that pertains to what you're looking for, there might be a sticky explaining something about it too. If you simply can't find what you're looking for in search or in stickies, by all means ask! If someone jumps on your ***, don't be afraid to let one of the admins know (Pro Stock John, Nine Ball, or myself).

Sorry the search feature doesn't work as well as you think it should. No need to be RUDE about it, its not like it costs you anything.

For those of you who think it should be better, why don't you band together and code a more user friendly one that can interface with VBulliten in its current form? I think that'd be a great idea.

Gee...I wonder why their search engine is so good.

Maybe next time try to not to insult everyone that has worked so hard to provide a FREE website to YOU.

Um, you can! I just tried it with your exact example to be sure I wasn't somehow remembering incorrectly, and it worked perfectly. 21 results for "temperature sender", and 3 pages of results for temperature sender without the quotes.

I'll make a nice comment here...
and start reading some of these threads. Read the threads dealing with AFR, etc. Within these threads will be a bunch of information. Weather it be a thread with 10 replies, or 100, there is usually a bunch of info. Go through all pages, and so on... You'll learn more abuot 5.3l heads, and other cylinder head information that you thought possible.

search is the ****. honesty, there hasnt been anything i couldnt find that i needed an answer too. the problem with some people is they expect to find there direct answer in the first post they "searched" and then dont bother to look past one or two threads.

reading seems lost on a generation .

FWIW i know i've personally answered the question of 5.3's vs 5.7's at least 100 times. the main advantage is the smaller combustion chamber for higher compression without having to mill the deck like you would 5.7 casting. but you'll want to out fit the 5.3 with larger intake valves as stock they come with 1.89" vs the 2.00" in the 5.7 . as far as port volumes and flow they are the same +/- a few cfm hear and there.
