What are the "marker" threads?

Not that I'm complaining at all, I just don't understand them, their content, or the very reason for their existance.
Instead of wandering around in constant wonder, I figured I'd ask the guys that know! Again, not a gripe at all, just genuine curiousity.

It allows the mods in that section to keep track of what threads they've read, and what they haven't. Every time they go to check a section, they find their marker and work their way from there to the top, then when they are done they bump the marker to the top, and it starts all over again!
