Default IS Something on this site always tore up?

First thing users get slapped about on this site is for NOT using the search engine. Does anyone take into account that the search engine is hardly ever working?

Seems like something is always wrong with the forums also. With all of the sponsorship on these boards, looks like someone could keep on it and keep things in working order at all times. RANT OFF.

do u realize how big this board is? and how the vBulliten software wasn't particulary designed for a board quite this big. the big issue with this site is the search, primarily the massive database it is searching and the sheer number of searches being done at any given time. u can search for the first post made on the forum ever probably. hardly any other sites allow that because of the load on the servers

I do realize this board is huge and its very helpful when it works. Seems like as big as it is though, something would be done about its constant search not working, and forums not working. I also visit some other sites also, while they are not as big, they dont seem to have the problems this site does with things constantly not working. You cant tell me this site doesnt make enough off of the sponsorship to hire someone to keep it up.

when i search for things, it usually works for me. however, i search for very specific things - it gives me relevant results. Searching for too broad of a term will give you a timeout every time.

Thats not search being broken, thats the database being ******* huge and you not using it correctly.

If the seacrh engine is down or the member has already tried a search, they should post in the thread that they have tried. That will stop other members for jumping on them.

Peace,
Craig.

Personally I love the site.

Gear is a very general search term which will yield many results.

That's your damn problem right there.

Typing "gear" in the search box WILL CAUSE A TIMEOUT. That is such a broad topic. BE MORE SPECIFIC. Just searching for that will probably bring up EVERY post in EVERY thread!! How many people have "gear" in their sig? Come on....your blaming something that you are causing. I've NEVER had a problem with search after I relized HOW to use it.

Error between the chair and the keyboard.

I absolutly LOVE this board,I've learned more about cars in general than ever before. This is an excellent place for friendship building, and it's free!

the website crawing at times is understandable - it has a LARGE user base. I see it spikes generally during the evening hours and sometimes lunch too.

Is it possable to delete some of the members on this site? (not me... ) I mean we have over 80,000 members. A good number of people don't use ls1tech anymore or the people that just come over here to troll. Seems like there's some sort of thing that could delete the account after not being activated (signed on) after a long period of time. Perhaps someone has already brought this up.

I'm certainly no guru like Brains, but my guess would be that the
number of members is fairly irrelevant. I would think the activity level
creates the problems.

The amount of inactive users has nothing to do with site speed - users currently interacting with the database is what matters as well as the size of the database itself.

87k members doesn't mean much if there are only 3 users taxing the database. But, its early sunday morning and we still have over 1600 users online right now.

"gear" is almost as bad as searching for "cam" or "heads". You'll bring up over a million hits - which is pointless.

Search for "3.73 12 bolt gears" in Gears and Axles, and you get only ONE hit - and I got that hit in under a second. Search works perfectly fine - its a USER ERROR.

OK I admit I am a dummy and need handholding on how to use search. But if I type in "broken gear" in the search box I get everything that contains the word "broken" OR the word "gear" instead of the string "broken gear" which is what I want. So how do I search for multi-word strings?

Search for broken+gear. Putting the + in between will make it search for threads with both words.

Fwiw, I hardly ever have a hard time with the search. If it's not working, I just wait it out for a little while. Also, when doing a search, i'll do the search under the appropriate forum by using the "Search this Forum" button.

Considering this site is offered to anyone for absolutely free, I still haven't figured out why people bitch so damn much.

Like Cyphur said, use the search correctly and you will get results. Searching for something rediculous, such as Camaro, or block, or clutch, will time out.
