Someone might want to ask them (or other similar very large sites) what they are doing to make it work.
The question is, what subset are they searching and how many searches are performed per minute? Most large forums will only index a small portion of the posts on the site, and we're trying to make sure everything is searchable. If you're only searching 2 million of those 12 million posts, search will haul ***. If you search all 12, you'll struggle if too many people are trying to hit the index at once.
