terrible detonation in phoenix - help
Hey guys, just wanted to start off by saying hello and let you know I've searched quite a bit so far and have not found the answer. I'm a bit new to this forum so my searching skills are probably not too effective since I'm not quite sure on the acronyms and jargon.
Anyway, if you guys could help or point me in the direction to get this issue fixed.
My mods - Air Raid cone air filter and a Gibson catback exhaust. These were on the truck when we bought it for my girlfriend last year.
What i'm experiencing is a hard start after the truck sits for longer than 20 minutes hot or cold engine and it is getting worse.
Also it may be related to the first problem, but I have a terrible wide open throttle knock/detonation in the upper rpms.
These problems have only started to happen but I thought that the arizona heat was causing a bit of vapor lock and the heat causing the detonation.
Here's what I've done to try and curtail the knock. I always fill up with 91 octane fuel - only from Loves or newer QT gas stations....I've even filled the tank with 4 gallons of 100 octane fuel with 91 and it was better but it was still so bad I couldn't use wide open throttle - even on the cooler mornings with the AC off.
I was thinking it could be the tune, which i'm not sure if it has one or not. Te fuel pump causing the hard starts and lean condition. Or the EGR but I always thought the EGR worked only durring part throttle and never under full throttle.
any ideas or shops to go to would be helpful. thanks - oh and i'm not completely out on buying an ECU modifying software like ls1 edit and such.

and not that I'm bragging but I think I hold the torque record on his dyno - 1117tq from my old cummins 12v so I am familiar with his shop.

The first year I had my TA(I know a truck is much different)I tried everything,new fuel filter replaced (thx 2 WS6 Garth) and also a couple gallons of 101 octane, after that didnt work I had timing pulled. I lost some HP but at least theres no more detonation.

Bought some MAF cleaner and sprayed the ever lovin crap out of it and let it dry - reinstalled and it ran perfectly. This also fixed the cold start problem I was having as well.
Word to the wise - I will never use an oil type cone airfilter again. Amsoil nano will be on the list when this filter dirties again.
