Thats why i think it didn't happen when i owned the car, the previous owner had n2o on the car. the piston ring is still sealing the cylinder only a peice of the top corner is missing. I would of heard a peice that big brake off and no to mention my turbine would of been damaged and its mint.

a piece that big would have definitely had some damage that motor probably has been torn apart after this has happened and they probably reuse that piston to be cheap *** holes
looks even like they cleaned up the missing part of the piston because
pistons will usually melt not just chip apart which would explain why there is no damage to block or head and if it was on n20 this sounds like the most likely story then the aholes cleaned it up put it back together and sold it to you
just my guess i could be complety wrong

from what i have heard is ls1 pistons do chip like that and usually the piece that breaks off melts away without causing major damage not all the time but this doesnt surprise me my buddies 99 n20 car had the same chip with no damage
