12 bolt should be good for a 9-10 second car, essentially the difference is size and amount of bolts to hold the ring gear to the carrier.

10 bolt= good auto X rear end, bad drag racing rear end due to too much ring gear play.

12 bolt= mass teh sex for drag racing. Most people put a 9in rear in their car because they want that super duper rear end, I will never see enough power to break my 12 bolt and it is an original gm product whereas the 9in was a ford design.
12 bolt is a 8.5" ring gear really? damn this whole time i swore it was a 8.875" ring gear...... there is a 10 bolt with 8.5 ring gears, generally they are seen in half-ton pickups, and older rwd impalas

the reason why the 10bolt is weak is because of too much ring gear play?? do you even know what your talking about? ring gear play or "backlash" is set by the installer of the gears... not because of the type of rear end.... also wouldnt the issue of the 7.5 10 bolt be the fact that is a friggin 7.5 inch ring gear!!!!

Yeah the ring gear tends to walk easier on the 10 bolt = more play. but thats cool Ryne, and I was under the impression teh 12 bolt was an 8.5 in rear, ok thanks for the correction of it bein an 8.875 in. Yes backlash is set by the installer, i wasn't referring to play in that matter just that fact that under torque the ring gear tries to walk up the pinion gear, sorry if my terms are not as cool as yours, but thank you again for the correction on the size of the 12 bolt. I am sure glad CMS is good for something.
