Been a Marine for 29 years. I've traveled the world hold two degrees, have owned 8 homes and make pretty damn good money. I have no reason to tell you not to join but follow your heart and what it is you really want. The Military is not for everyone and the country is full of wannabe's. BTW Job security is not an issue. When all the nay sayers start chiming in, ask them why not and take into consideration their ages and actual experiences. Remember that misery loves company.

I'm sure you'll do well in either occupation. Good thing about Sherriff's is, you get to stay home.

Well get three years experience in one of the services come back home and get yourself on the top of their list. Even the National Guard will get you some experience and almost all law enforcement agencies prefer former Military.

I joined because I couldn't afford college, and I'm pretty happy. I'm in the navy, get to work on helicopters, and have a pretty good time. Yeah it sucks getting deployed, but nowhere near like what the army and marines have to do, those guys get my full respect. The bright side is I make more money than any of my friends from high school, I have a chance to earn a degree with no bill over my head, and I get to travel all over the world for free. Even though I plan to get out when this enlistment is up, I would still join if I had to do it over. But like they said, its not for everyone.

im in the navy as well. If the economy wasnt how it is i would say to get a job with a good NEC, that will get you some good bonuses. however, im not sure how it is now. I re enlisted 2 more years for 30K. Its a good experience. I have been here for almost 7 years and Its time for me to go. im deployed and i missed the birth of my first child, so i made a decision to not miss anything else with her. But like i said, it is a great experience, and you get to see the world. Worth a shot man.

in the air force now for 7 years!! im originally from the bay area... and honestly the military has been good to me man. unless u are actually doing something good, its tough to say " DONT JOIN THE MILITARY". i get a pay check every 1st and 15th, medical for me and my family is free, and everything else.

i feel bad for a few of my buddies back home that cant find a job who have kids man. the military is a very good thing.

i would rather deploy to iraq for 6-7 months than work in a ******* mall selling cell phones or a job that only pays $10 bucks an hour.

I was in the AIr Force. Kinda got shitted on but I have been thinking about re enlisting with my IRR time being up, it was awesome always in great shape (no air force doesn't ride bicycles our PT test is harder than the army's they get 2 mins to do what the air force has to do in one minute) I miss the job I had boradcast journalism it was fun. I was on my way to Germany when they said i was getting let go under force shaping.

I recommend it, I should have went when i was 18 but I waited a couple years still scored high enough on the ASVAB to get whatever job I wanted. I say Marines or Air Force. Marines will help you get super structure and the Air force would give you the ability to get a great job after you get out. Worked for my dad he is now making over 6 figures and he doesn't have a college degree only what he learned in the Air Force.

Take a couple months to think about it and really weight the pros and cons for yourself.

8 years Army Infantry. The ONLY reason I got out was because I didn't want to bring up a family around the Army, and I didn't want to be away for 15 every other year. Absolutely loved it and what these guys have said before me is true. You get a lot of opportunities while your in and an honorable discharge looks great after you get out. I honestly have nothing bad to say about it.
