I was under the impression that when you do an engine swap you have to get it inspected. While a lq4 or something similar will look very much like an ls1 it will not get by the inspector. I would not be worried about sneaking an lq9 by the smog guy it is just the inspector that would be the problem.

but that is not a problem when the car comes up as a v6? I dont believe the v6 cars have the same emissions standards.
On a factory v8 car i think you could get away with a ls3, lq4 or whatever swap along those lines.
On a factory v6 car i think you would need an ls1 with the proper emissions equipment then have it inspected and certified and whatever before smog.
Dont know but that makes sense to me

The disconnect b/w you and SRJ is the fact that technically, you have to comply with what I linked above vs. the fact no tech would be able to tell what you did.

In the case of a v6 car, I think it would all depend on what the v6 standards are. I don't see them running super clean, but I could be wrong. Every time I've ever been to a smog station, they do the visual inspections, which just means that they look at whatever smog sticker you have in your engine bay and look to make sure that the AIR and EGR are where they are supposed to be and they will check under your car for cats. So intheory, if you have a LS1 radiator support with the LS1 smog sticker, the smog stuff will match the sticker and they will pass it visually. Then all you have to worry about is if the LQ4 will meet v6 emissions standards. I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

See I was thinking LS1.

I would not be surprised either.

You guys are all over thinking this. This car can be bought as a roller and have a LS1 swapped into it and pass smog no problem, assuming all emissions equipment are there and it blows the numbers. On top of that, An LQ4 or LQ9 is not going to matter either, because to the eye of the smog tech, it looks like an LS1 on the outside as Jason already mentioned with his 5.3 swapped SS.
Just because this roller for sale is a base coupe and not a Z28 or SS does not make any difference. All the smog techs look at, is the fact that they have a V8 Camaro in front of them. That is all the computer asks the tech for as well. It doesnt ask for sub model specific. It is acceptable to swap a V8 into an F-body that was a originally a V6 because the LS1 was an available option for that car. It can be smogged as normal without having to tell the technician anything other than you have a V8 Camaro. You don't have to say what it started life out as.
For good measure, you would obviously want to remove the model year sticker under the hood that says the car was originally equipped with a V6.
