Default Need some opinions

Okay. I have finally paid off all my student loans and for the first time, in a long time, I am debt free! That being said I now want to focus attention on adding some performance mods to my car.

98 camaro ss all (32,000) miles stock except for Lid and catback

Here's the dilemma,

I already have the slp lid, and the tsp rumbler catback. I was wondering if adding some shorty headers would be beneficial to me. At least enough to offset the cost? I would go with longtubes but im in california...

Also becasue I am looking to keep this smog legal. I was thinking of going with the tr224 cam with 114 LSA. I have heard that that is pushing the limits of passing the sniffer test.

What springs should I run? and retainers?

Also if I was to add a set of heads from another year of LS car, I know the 243's are 'the best' are any other heads in stock or lightly modified trim that would be beneficial for me to add to my stock engine?

Any help is appreciated.

doubt you wouldnt be able to get by with some longtubes unless you know somebody that knows somebody..lol. but you can try and run some mac midlengths with a catted y - pipe. i think 2 issues ago, GMHTP magazine has a project car called "CT" where they added heads, cam and headers for the project that would pass cali strict emissions. i think they used a Z06 cam and some AFR 205 heads. i would see if you can run a 224 cam on a 115 with the AFR heads.

I would suggest LS6 heads and LS6 cam with mid length headers. I know that with mids you wont pass visual, but most places arent as concerned with visual as long as you have cats and no long tubes, and you will still passed the sniffer as long as you have cats.

01-02 Camaro heads (241) are better than your 98 heads

As far as the emissions stuff, I just thought it would be easier (cheepur) to stay emissions legal. But its not mandatory *wink* I found a set of 243 z06 heads for around 400. Is that a good deal? Or should I just look for the 241's?

I guess I just dont know what the overall difference is between the two (241's vs. 243's)

eh it all depends on what you want. Are you willing to spend about $1500 to pick up 40 horsepower, that is what a 224 cam would do for you.

Tell us your power goals and how much you want to spend.

IMO, call Geoff at EPS he'll set you up with cam grind that'll work best for you.
http://www.engpwrsys.com/
That's who did my cam, 222/234/ 115 lsa. Now all I need to do is install it!
If you're not going with LT headers your going to need more exhaust duration than intake duration. Some thing like a 218/226 113lsa, 220/228 114 or 115lsa, 222/230 115lsa, or 224/228 115lsa, for intakes get a SLP LS6 , or a BBK SSI. A ported stock, or larger TB.
Like myself LT header are not an option, so yes IMO shorty headers are worth it. If AFR 205's heads are within your budget, there smog legal and will still help with improving the flow.

I agree. Some AFR heads would be great for a cam around those specs and theyre really torque heads so you'll love the power in the lower rpms. If you go with a stock get them ported and polished and my choice of spring would be Patriots Xtreme Golds. There are a ton of options out there to be 400+hp and pass smog. Good luck and have fun.
