First off make sure the seals dont leak, however its always a good idea to replace them while it is out. If you are able to remove the rear cover if it already isn't off and inspect the mesh between the pinion and ring gear. The proper way to inspect the pattern wear is to get spray paint, paint the ring gear and and spin the assembly. The wear marks should show a clean pattern in the middle. Also look for signs of excessive metal shavings in the oil or the magnet. The last thing to check is the bearings but you wont be able to do this without a tear down, but you can atleast check the axle bearings. grab the studs (wear gloves) and try to move it up and down. Make sure the any bolt holes arent stripped and that mounting holes arent oblonged. Good luck!
