Default what does the computer check for when the smog tech connects the computer to my car?

Does it match the motor to the VIN or just checks for working sensors?? Reason I ask is because I was told by a performance shop that If I was to swap any 5.7L LSx into my car that the tech won't know the difference and all the computer checks for on the OBD is working sensors.

The OBDII check is a functional check that scans for any codes and readiness status of the monitors. The Smog machine won't know if a different engine has been swapped but the tech will do a visual inspection of all emission components so he will know if there is a different type of engine in there, for example an LT1 to an LS1... or he SHOULD know... otherwise he should find a new job. Just my .02 And btw I'm a license Smog Tech so that's not what I heard from a friend of a friend... that's what I know for a fact. Not to come off as an A**hole in any way... just stating facts.

Into my '98 Camaro. I've been thinking about an LS6 swap.

If you swapped a LS6 into an originally equipped LS1 car and kept all emissions equipment the same (stock/CARB legal manifolds w/ AIR, modify intake for EGR, stock cats, etc) the Smog shop would never know anything and you'll pass easily.

That's what I was hoping. I do plan on keeping everything as legal as possible. The only problem that I can think of is an intake manifold with EGR for an LS6.

Many people have drilled out and added a fitting to LS6 manifold to accept the EGR hose. A little bit of engineering is all it will take.

Engineering is what I lack. lol. I'm sure there's a wright up. Other than that, there shouldn't be any other issues??

You could always sell your LS6 manifold, and pick up an SLP LS6 with the EGR Provisions already in it.

You could always "update" your car to an 02. They didnt come with the EGR or AIR iirc...and its smog legal if inspected and approved

Starting in 1999, the PCM's are different as the Pins in wiring harness are not the same as in a 1998. Contact Doc at www.efialchemy.com for more info.
