Default car wont start. need help please.

Wednesday the car ran good. Thursday morning my friend turned it on to go to work and it didn't crank at all. When I leave the key in a on position the service engine soon light is on along with a check gauges and a flashing security light. What could it be. Vehicle is a 2002 camaro ss 35th anniversary LE.

Search vats and you'll see what you need to do. You can try cleaning your key or using a spare if you have one.

did you try using your keyless entry to lock it and then unlock 30 mins later? that works in some GMs. also, use a multimeter (set ohm meter to 20K) to check the resistance (ohms) of the metal contacts on the key. you are looking for a value between 0.386 and 12.290. Anything other than in that range the key is bad.

The keys hardly ever go bad. Majority of the time the contacts in the lock cylinder are dirty or bad and you have to replace it or bypass vats.

Thanks SRJ.
I think the easier way for my friend is to buy the ignition switch and key and see what happens. Thank you all for the feedback/Info.

I went the cheap route for now when this happened to me and just bought a resistor at radioshack to bypass it. I even forgot I had a resistor in place. This was a good reminder that I still need to purchase a new lock cylinder.

You might have to go to the dealership for this fix (if someone knows that you can do it yourself, post up). I think it costs something like 450 to get it done there. That's why most just use a resistor and bypass it.

If you had access to a LS1 parts car, you can also swap the steering column and BCM from that car together. Would still be much cheaper than going to the dealership.
