Default 3rd Gen Guys Welcome

so my friends TPI motor has been acting up lately.
Vehicle is a 1987 IROC-Z. The car starts fine at cold temps, but once it goes hot and turn off the car, and turn it back on again, it doesnt start.
It cranks and cranks and nothing. I have to put brake cleaner through an intake tube in order to make it start, which is does. What can cause the car to be doing that. A few have said fuel pump, others have said a cold start fringe that sprays certain amount of gas, etc.
any info will be well appreciated. thanks.

Check the coolant temp sensor. It can cause a no start when hot.

I Forgot to mention, it was replaced. The mechanic thought it was that at first, but problem is still the same.

'87 has a cold start injector, that could be part of the issue. But if you are getting good spark, and it does this only on hot starts, you need to OHM out ALL the injectors, make sure they are within spec. I had this exact issue, and could get it running with carb cleaner or ether.

Problem turned out to be partially clogged/worn out injectors. This new ethanol fuel will kill them eventually (it is what killed mine). Those Multec injectors are known for being very shoddy and ethanol intolerant. Flushing them is also not recommended as per the FSM.

If they are original and have a good amount of miles on them, it certainly couldn't hurt. You can even get injectors from the scrap yard for cheap, from an LT1, they are a direct swap. Definitely make sure you have good fuel/spark before replacing anything else though.

Well when the temp sensor got replaced, the mechanic checked the spark plugs, the fuel pressure and all of that works.
My other mechanic said it could be the fuel pump, someone else today said distributor.

Did you try swapping on some LT1 injectors yet? You can get them for cheap at a junkyard like Ecology Autoparts in Santa Fe Springs. I think I bought a LT1 intake complete with rail and injectors for 30 bucks. You could always send out that intake and have it modified to be used on that engine, but that's another story for another time...

anything to do with fuel can cause fuel injectors, clogged fuel pump, etc
fuel pressure relay may have been old and not getting good contact through the pigtail connector.

ignition control modules are well known in those engines to go bad

I kinda have the same problem,
once my car gets warmed up an you turn it off it takes a while to start =/ but haven't really looked into it, and i believe the motor should be same as a 89 tpi only thing that changes is belt rotation i believe not sure. but as far as the problem I dont know.

and mine has new fuel pump 2nd new one to be exact, an new ignition control module, and fuel pressure relay and a lot of other sensers so it might just be the injectors
