The Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible will share the Indianapolis 500 track Sunday with Danica Patrick and 32 other drivers in Speedway, Ind.

The vehicle, which starts at $29,275, is the official pace car for the century-old event that starts at noon.

“Before Chevrolet was a brand, Louis Chevrolet and his brothers made a name for themselves behind the wheel of a race car,” said Jim Campbell, General Motors Co. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “After Chevrolet became a car company, Louis and his brothers continued to race at Indy, forging one of the most storied relationships in automotive racing."

According to the Detroit automaker, the 2011 Camaro SS is the 22nd Chevrolet (seventh Camaro) to pace the 500. It first appeared in 1967, the year of Camaro’s introduction, and then again two years later.

This year's Camaro pace car is white with oragnge stripes and meant to resemble the Camaro pace car from 1969.

Chevrolet will offer 500 of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indianapolis 500 pace cars for sale. They are expected to be at dealerships this spring.

For non-race fans, a pace car helps start the race and limits the speed of competing cars on a track in case of a caution period.
