So I have been out of the car game for awhile now. I recently got back into it when I picked up an 04 gto as a project car. I live in an apartment so modding the car myself is kinda hard. Went to a race shop and wow. They can not do anything to these cars. Shorty headers with cats stock cams??? How do you guys get around it??
I'm going to smog the car soon and then probably do some long tubes myself.
Afraid to change the cam though.

Give me some advice guys

if you wanna mod these cars, pretty much gonna have to put smog aside, other than suspension/visual mods

Become friends with someone who owns a smog shop. Buy em a 12pack of coronas. They ****** love that lol. Then pay him some money to hook it up. Luckily here in imperial we dont have to smog cars more than once.

There are LS specific shops who know what cams, heads, and other mods will keep you smog legal.

on almost any car, the only smog legal headers are shortys, and thats because CA says that the factory style cats need to be present and in the factory location.

There are plenty of things that can be done to a GTO though. What about a fast intake manifold? Magna-charger is smog legal. Cat back is legal.

To put it simply, there are both legal and illegal mods. The choice depends on your goals, $$$, and what type of headaches you can tolerate.
