Default Crime along the Pacific Coast Hwy??

My wife and I would enjoy a vacation along the PCH from Monterey south but we looked at the crime stats for property crime and not many communities scored well. Are car burglaries and theft from vehicles that bad out there?? We know about the large cities and will avoid them. Can anyone chime in or should we just forget it? We know about leaving items in view, not welcoming thieves, etc... We've been travelling the US for over 40 years but this PCH drive remains on our 'bucket list'. Thank heavens we visited SF and LA during the 80's when it was much better. Thanks in advance!

You should be ok until you hit outside of LA. There isnt a whole lot of population density, but I imagine there is still a fair share of crackheads and methheads just like anywhere. Stay in 3 star hotels if possible, usually have security or cameras to keep an eye on the property overnight. Most criminals are looking for smash and grab opportunities when no ones around.
