Well, to tell you the truth, wrenching for a living isn't all that great especially here in Albuquerque. If your looking for the "big bucks" fixing cars your gonna have to go out of New Mexico or maybe work on BMW's. But if you really want to get into the business, your best bet is starting off changing oil and/or be an apprientice at a shop and move up from there. I went the apprientice route for 2 years at a local dealership and then went on my own. I've been doing it for 14 years now which is about 10 years too long IMO. You might have better luck in the long run moving up the ladder in the banking/credit union carrer.

Oh man that sucks I can say the same, been a heavy aircraft mechanic for 17+ years with a major airline and now I have nothing. No pension-retirement nothing. Will probaly be on the street within the next 3 months. 85k a year to nothing. Times are tight and getting worse. Its time to find a different line of work. Automotive might be the way to go but have to start back at the bottom, oh well.

You might want to try all the car dealers here (new and used). Going in and talking to the service and/or parts managers wouldn't hurt. And since all the dealerships are clumped together, it wouldn't take you long at all.

Edit: Carmax just opened as well and I bet they might still be looking for people.
