Default Hypertech with California gas

I have a 1999 WS-6 T/A and have tuned it with the HyperTech HPP3. At first I used the setting for reformulated gas (RFG), which is what HyperTech recommends. Then I heard that someone got significantly better power using the Non-RFG setting, and I changed to this setting. I don't really notice a power difference either way (although I don't have any track times or dyno runs to refer to), and I'm not getting any spark-knock on the Non-RFG setting.

My question is: Is it dangerous to use the Non-RFG setting with California reformulated gas? Or is HyperTech just being hyper-safe?

Wish I could answer your question. But I had to comment on the Hypertech programmer, first off when I used it I did feel a bit of a power increase it really helped on taking corners -sounds dumb- the downside for me was that my gas mileage was hurt kinda bad, buy I did tune in my own program, instead of there custom one.

Can be dangerous if you already have a lean condition and the PCM is already pulling timing. You may think your not getting any K/R but the only way to really know for sure is on a wide band or have someone read your a/f tables with autotap, or an HP tuner.

Back when I was using the HPP3, I used to use the Non-RFG tuning. People have had mixed results. Some used to get K/R due to the extra spark advance, some were fine. I was lucky and my car ran really decent with it. Dyno'd back then at 321rwhp/335rwtq with a decent wideband a/f reading (low 13.0's).

Thanks for the info, 99Hugger. I guess I'll play it safe and run RFG until I can be sure I'm safe to run the non-RFG.
