Default Cali Smog Emissions

Where would I go to check the legal smog emissions for the state of CA. I want to put headers on my '99 z-28 but hear that long tubes are outlawed. is there any way around this or are shorties my only option.

anytime you relocate the cats its an automatic fail. You can pass the sniffer with a tune and cats, but you would have to find someone who will overlook the visual part of the inspection. Just do a little bit of asking around. I am sure you will be able to find the right kind of guy who would overlook that. So go with the LT's, I personally would not waste my money on shorties.

Screw Swarzeneiger and his stupid laws. You know he owns an H1 hummer with a LT1 in it? You think he has cats on it?

dude, i already told you what route to go if you want to be smog legal.

NO LT, NO moving of cats, NO removing egr/air systems. must pass sniffer, visual, and OBDII. that means no overlap with cams which leaves out 90% of the shelf cams out there. all mods must have a CARB number, ect.

If you want to stay smog legal, don't modify ANYTHING related to the exhaust, intake, or engine.

legally there is NO way around having long tube headers at all.so you can either hope they overlook the headers, pay for an illegal smog,or swap them out.
btw this isnt arnold's fault most of these laws were sighned by wilson and davis.personally i think arnold is on our side by keeping his gas guzzlers and not giving in and buying a metro or something.

I'm considering going with the volant induction. Would that be considered illegal in California? I know the K&N FIPK has a CARB number.

Don't count on being able to find somebody ... do realize how stiff the fines are for doing that? It was tough years ago before I left CA and tougher now.

They should make exceptions for hot rodders. Like my old '56 (327) doesn't ever even get inspected. It has straight out headers, cross over pipe and Flowmasters. It has a blow-by tube and vented rocker arm covers. The crankcase vents to the street.

But, now they (California) sometimes force people to go to a state run smog place and you can be chosen on a random basis.

Best bet in California, keep all your stock siht and put it all back on when you get smogged if you have to go to their inspection station.

Most people that install headers give the job a zero fun rating. Do you really want to uninstall and reinstall your headers, cats, and y-pipe every couple of years? Well, maybe you're a glutton for punishment. If I were you, I'd be looking at a cam like the CheaTR that's engineered for stock manifolds and passing smog, and forget the header hassles.

My car passes visual, obd-ii, and sniffer w/ mods in sig.

You could pass with LT's if you had a set with decent cats and the Smog Tech was willing to look past the visual. I was gonna install LT's and just swap every two years or try to find a shady shop.

I said "screw it" though and am just gonna leave the car like it is. Probably does about 365whp now which is fast i guess.. Probably could have 380whp if I had long tubes.. oh well.

California ..
