Default 1975 & Earlier Smog Exemption

If I buy a 1975 or earlier car or truck, what do I have to do to register it? Do I need an inspection or just pay the money. Can I put in a highly modified engine as long as it's not too loud or is their still some smog requirements. For example, 1975 vehicles had cats. If I got a used 75, would I still need them?

All 1975 and older cars and trucks are smog exempt. Even though there is talk about bringing those earlier vehicles back into the smog program I have a feeling that will never happen. On a side note, the 30 year rolling exemption is no longer in effect as of April 1st. This means if you own a 1976 and newer car youll have to smog it indefinately unless the BAR changes it again. Change of ownership no longer reguires a smog inspection if the vehicle is 4 years or newer and if its not an initial registration from out of the state. Vehicles 6 years or newer are exempt form the biennial inspections. So, yeah...you can modify your 75.

Take your car and your pink slip to DMV. They will verify that the pink goes with the vehicle and they document the VIN and serial numbers for the vehicle. After that, mod yourself crazy if it has not already been modded. As long as the vehicle is street legal, you shouldn't have a problem.
