Excuse my ignorance, but what's the difference? Is "race gas" rated higher?

Oh i know higher than 91 is not race gas, but the old 76 locator (anything 92+) was just called that. Just a question though, at what octane (104+?) or chemical mixture does it become "race gas". I know there are a ton of variations based on the intended use, but i general description would be great. Sorry to be taking away from the flow of valuable sources, but i think this is a very interesting subject.
