Well, looks like I might be renting a room from someone else from my work. It's a 3 bedroom house around Indian School Road and 86th Avenue in Phoenix. Does anyone know that area pretty well? Decent houses, safe parking, close to grocery stores, etc.?

86th ave isnt too bad around indian school. IS gets nasty if you go east of about 67th ave... but 86th is not too bad, thats a mile or so east of the 101.

I've managed to track down some cheaper apartments. The Ranchwood is only $550/month and is at 5740 North 59th Avenue in Glendale.
There is also Rancho Santa Fe which is around that price as well, located at 10201 North 44th Drive in Glendale.
Another is the Desert Gardens apartments, which is just east of Luke AFB in Glendale.
Anyone know the areas these apartments are in or have anything to say about them specifically? Are there are any areas on the west/northwest/north side of Phoenix that I should be avoiding?

avoid phoenix period. or dont carry anything valuable in your car.

and avoid the places that you listed, glendale and 59th is a historic district, 44th drive is near ghettoish.

What's in this area guys? I found a guest house that I can rent for $950 furnished with utilities paid for, and it's on a $750k property so it's a good neighborhood. Is it a pretty good neighborhood all around it? What sort of things are in the area? The house is on Union Hills Drive, where I have it marked on the map.

nice area! must be a guest house? right next to the 101 and it will take you everywhere.

you might be able to find a house (by yourself) for that price if your just renting/leasing short term, somewhere just slightly south of there. check the local newspaper online. " the arizona republic"

good luck!

you would also be, just above arrowhead mall area, and there is "everthing" over there. bars/food/shopping/hookers just playing on the hookers!

This house would be by myself, since noone is living on the property currently. The guest house has an upstairs apartment and downstairs one, so I'd be all alone unless they rented out the other part of the guest house. The only concern is that they're listing the house for sale, so it's possible it'd sell before the end of April, when I would move out. But this is looking like the best option for me regardless.

the market is flooded with rental houses, you should have no problem finding one when your ready. just post up your finds to get the real story on the neighborhood (not the realtor version) before your commit.

Haha, I don't know if I'm bringing the Camaro out there yet boys. Though it's been changed from the sig. I've switched to a 90/90 setup and went mafless, put in a LG custom cam, and am going to be putting in Mcleod twin in the next couple weeks. And hopefully will have a custom 3" over the axle dual exhaust from LG before the end of the year as well.
