Headers/Exhaust questions
Think next year my cars gonna start requiring a smog check, so I'd prefer to stay within the law. Really quite ignorant when it comes to this stuff, so I have a few questions.
Are any headers legal here, long-tubes in particular?
If I were to buy a headers/cats/cat-back system, about how much would it be to have installed? Also just the cats and cat-back system?. Would like to get the whole package, but might not have quite enough at the moment for the headers as well. One of my cats is broken, and already had just a cheap muffler and tips put in a while back and now it's rattling like a ****, so just wanna pull all that crap out and do it right now that I have some funds.
Any advice on particular brands/parts and good places to have the work done around the IE would be appreciated too.
Mid-lengths aren't legal either but you MIGHT get away with making a plate for a set of mid-lengths (like MACs) that has the CARB number of some legal shorties... Not recommending this just throwing it out there...
Some shorties are legal but d@mn near pointless especially since you already have the higher flowing manifolds (2001-2002)...
Now, aside from just saying screwing it and getting a "guy" to pass you here's a few things to note...
1) GMMG cars used stock manifolds (not sure they all did but I know a lot of them were stock manifolds that were ported, SO you could port yours) and made good power...
2) The money spent on shorties for MINIMAL (1-5hp I believe) would be WAYYYY better spent on other mods (small cam for example)...
SO, I would recommend (if you REALLY want to stay legal) put the money into high-flowing y-pipe/cats, and a 4" Mufflex cat-back (I prefer the dual out with the Spintech muffler) or the GMMG chambered exhaust (both about the same price) or (for a cheaper but well flowing alternative) a Magnaflow cat-back system...
Not sure what cats to recommend, I don't run any... I guess for a y-pipe you could go with the SLP y-pipe...
Hope this helps.
Installation for a cat-back around here is $50-$100...
