Default Blew the LT1

o new years day im getting onto the freeway and its got no power so as im getting off on the very next exit the car starts to pour smoke out of it and I shut it off instantly and push it to the parking lot. When I get to the parking lot there is oil everywhere under the car and I get it towed to my home. On the 93's the oil pressure sending unit is above the oil filter and that somehow blew open and dumped all the oil under my car. After I replace it with a new one and change the oil and filter I drive the car and its still got no power and devleoped a knock. As im trying to get the car home it can only get up to 25 mph so I shut it down on the side of the road and tow it home. Im fairly sure it ran with no oil for that 1/2 mile on the freeway and now its toast spun the berring. 96k miles is all this one got.

On the bright side at least I have the bike to drive. And I have a reason to build a tough bottom end but ill be without a car for a good 5-8 months due to being a student with a students budget.

Same price is a negative...

Remember also its not just the motor he will have to replace if he does LS1, all that **** adds up fast. Not to mention the time involved with doing a motor AND tranny swap on a 4th gen F-body.

It would probably be easier to invest in a fresh LT1, then sell it and buy an LS1 equipped F-body. Saves alot of time and money.

Sucks about the motor blowing up though!

you think it will be a better choice to rebuild/ replace his lt1 sell it with almost 100k miles, turn around and buy a ls1 f body, i dont think so, actually i dont wanna start a sensless argument but i think your way takes more time and money, honestly all he would need is a wire harness and the motor. maybe a few odds and ends i couldnt see going over 1k,

sorry for the rebuttle, i think you have a point, but i think the smart choice to achieve and ls1 is to put one in himself.

goddamn luke, dont be pissed cause you cant take the SS tomorrow

i was actually messing with you, but like viscious said, ive priced out a swap and it would come up to about $4-5k for the engine/trans/k member/harness and PCM. then another xxxx amount to mod it. rather than building up a 355 or 383 with ported heads and a nice cam for $2-4k.

ive seen more LS1s blow or spin a bearing than high mileage LT1s/GEN I engines.

dont fear the opti luke, dont fear the opti

i guess you guys are right, well **** i will hang my head in shame and walk outside in the cold and punish myself for being in idiot, no sarcasm.

as for more ls1's blowing up then lt1's i wouldnt know to be honest, id say its the opposite, but thats just me, and i do fear the opti, actually i love it, little coolant gets on them and yours truly just made 300 bucks, it was nice working for a shop who has an account with a cab company.

oh and i forgot i have done my fair share with the lt1 i know some of you probably wont believe me, but john force once had a yellow caprice wagon, and who did all the work on it???? exactly i did. **** headers intake lt4 package, couple optis here and there. built a bas *** 4l60e for him **** we did everything to that wagon, i wouldnt be surprised if that car walked my 02 with my slicks lol.

Its just a black 93 TA with a WS6 hood. But Im going to do just a 383 LT1 if everything works out good in the next few weeks. And I dont belive all the bad things about the opti as I use to work the parts dpt. 90% of the time I feel that its operator error on opti failure. I would love to get an ls1 car and I have done a few cam swaps on the LS1's but Im waiting until I graduate to get myself one though.

More Bad news with it. So The bikes tire was flat due to a nail so I was forced to limp the car to school. Half way there and KABOO. bye bye rod. The intake manifold is full of coolant and the exhaust is full of oil.

I feel your pain, Oct 18th I was driving my car home from work, at 120 on the frwy I felt something let loose on my car. Pulled off the frwy and parked the car. Walked the 2 miles home, then had it towed home the next morning. 2 weeks later I pulled the motor out to see what was wrong with it, and when i pulled the driverside head off, I noticed that there was a monster hole in my number one piston, and my intake valve was missing off the head. So here I am now just about to finnish up my rebuild of the car. Nice thing is, is that its forged now, and has a bigger cam and better heads. Should be fun now.
BTW this was on my LS1 Camaro.
