it seems that people judge how good gas is based on its price. I think i heard that costco isnt always the same gas, its whatever is left over on trucks, so it could be chevron, mobil, shell, arco, but usually its mixed. if there was such thing as a bad type of gas then they wouldnt be around long, they are very much regulated.

My dad was an executive for Arco before BP bought it out, thats how i know they share refineries with shell. in so cal shell uses arco gas, and in northern cali arco uses shell gas.

That is interesting. I have a friend who is a regional director for Exxon and the way he explained it is that gas is the same everywhere by the octane rating regulations, however, to maintain that octane rating at the pump it needs additives. All the majors have high grade additives while places like costco, sams and such buy the gas without the additives to buy the gas cheaper then they add low grade additives.

I guess at this point who knows....

Use 76 and chevron and only 92 octane

I thought i had heard Shell uses the the same gas or additives as Chevron?

its possible that they changed things after BP bought Arco. what you say might be true, i have used shell a few times and the runs exactly the same as it does after chevron. thats not how it used to be.
