is it

a., he sets the trap but is just going crazy
b. those zombies set the trap to get him back for taking that girl?

He was going stir crazy from being alone all that time. He started to imagine things. The maniquin did move in the movie, but IMO it was showing you from his perspective. He set the trap and just forgot about it.
