Default STOCK C6 Z06 - Not passing smog...?

So my GF's dad just called... said he's at the smog shop and just failed...

he just bought this car 3 weeks ago with 7k miles on it... it's completely stock... he's really worried about what to do... he can't register it without getting it smogged...

anyone else find this odd?

well take it to the dealership since the cats are warrantied for 8 years. I didn't even know you had to smog the car for the first few years except on transfers so nevermind.

Its not unheard of, the exhaust flaps when they are open will break the legal limit for Db level as well.

long story short...

The GF's dad lives in California...

The vette was purchased from a guy in AZ...

However, we purchased the vette under my GF's name because we are AZ residents and there would be no out of state tax that way...

Her dad, cut her a check for the full amount...

She mailed him the title

It's now in his name, and will be a CA car as soon as it can be registered...

IF he can get it to pass smog...

Federal emissions are warrantied for 8 years/100k miles. The dealership HAS to make it pass emissions for those 8 years/100k miles unless of course you mess with them.

The car may be a 49-state car but I doubt GM built the Z06 that way doesnt make much sense.
like above take it to the dealership, for warranty

Smog is not required for new cars until the hit 6 years old. but it does need to be smogged if transfer of title/ or state transfer.

and for the exhaust the vacuum controlled butterfly valves bypass the muffler not the cats so it shouldnt effect the emission by that much. Noise yes but we all like higher db right

maybe its got some mods he wasn't told about? I would take it to a dealership and tell me to get it fixed, but make sure they tell you everything that they are doing to it to make it pass.

Have him drive it around really hard to get the cats good and hot, then go to a different smog shop. There's no reason it shouldnt pass, unless maybe the shop is trying to pull a fast one on him. Like maybe they thought he has a vette, so he has money, so they would charge him to 'fix it' so it passes. Just seems fishy to me for a brand new car to not pass

update.....

he called yesterday and said they tried it a second time, and it passed...

apparently the guy he took it to, wasn't doing a few things right... he said while watching the guy put it on the rollers, the computer was saying to drive the car at certain speeds... well the guy was just sitting in the car letting it idle and he did a few more things that weren't correct...

so her dad mentioned a few things to the guy and they re-did it, and it passed with flying colors... moron....
