Default 4l80 going rate?

Hi guys- I've been collecting parts for a swap for quite a while and I've lurked a ton on this website. I have finally found a used 4l80 2wd but I have no clue what the going rate is. I searched but couldn't find anything recent. It's a 96, unknown miles. It would be a 3 hour trip so no chance of checking the fluid (if it's not drained already). The guy is asking $750 which seems steep to me but again, I have no clue really. I do know I've had a hell of a time finding a 4l80 period, let alone in the 2wd configuration I want. So, is $750 too much?? Location is Colorado if that matters.

$500 is what I would consider the going rate for a used 2wd 4l80e. The 96 is a good year trans as a foundation. If you get it for 650 I’d say it wouldn’t be terrible lol

i'm paying up to 500 for cores now. "runners" with verifiable miles are rare and going for 900+

I had a hard time finding one when I needed one 2 years ago. I ended up paying $600 for a used 2wd unit that the guy said ran perfect. After I installed it, the pump spewed fluid out so I had a trans shop look at it and it turned out the entire trans required a rebuild. So that was a nice surprise ($1,200). The original guy that sold it did refund me $300 so it turned out that I got a core for $300 which I thought was fair.

10 Years ago... I would not pay more than $150 for a 4L80E Core.
I can't get over the increase in Price!

If I could send myself a message 10 Years in the past...

I would say to purchase as many 4L80E Cores as possible, and sit on them for 10 Years.

I would be selling the Cores right now for a 300-500 Percent Increase!
$$$$$$$$$$$$

Okay, I will be honest...
I would also give myself the results of 10 Super-Bowl Games to gamble and win on!!!

Thanks for the input guys! Sounds like it's more reasonable than my initial reaction thought. I ended up throwing the guy an offer of $650, we'll see what he says. The unknown of if it functions has me a bit nervous but that comes with the territory of the swap game lol
TI the point of the price increase, you ain't kidding! Like I said I did some searching before posting and I was finding threads from years ago referencing prices in the $200-$300 range. That is just hard to fathom! I take it the growth in LS swap popularity is the cause? Supply/demand and all that jazz.

The "race parts" companies have some decent prices on ready to go ones.. I paid 1600 for a hand rebuilt 4l65E, the guy gets about 2200 for a 4l80E. Now I am not any kind of auto-transmission knowledgeable guy at all. But he delivered on time and the trans shifts amazing. So for now I'm good. I did notice I could have gotten one from a name vendor for about 1700. Dont know which was the better deal..

I’ve been looking too. Seems like a proven good junk yard pull $1500 ish, unknown or super high mileage (core to build) $800ish
rebuilt ready to go 3-4K usually with a core charge of $600 or more. Getting hard to find. Compared to a 60 they came in way less vehicles and haven’t come in anything since 2013. Any body see some good deals out there post links. 👌
