Default Recalibrating Speedo after wheel changes...

Do you need to do this when you put 17x11s in the back ? Im running 285/40/17s

How do you know when to do this ?

you might only be off a few mph, since you changed your tire to a 285 instead of a 275.

You're running 285/40/17's on an 11" wheel now, or you're going to switch to one? That tire is way to skinny for that wide of a wheel.

the width wont change the mph, the ride height does so you shouldn't have to recalibrate the speedo. Also like trust mentioned a 285 is to thin for a 11" wide wheel

I see what you're saying, but I believe the 40 is a percentage of the 285 or 275 or any other width. I almost want to say that it's 40%, but i'm not quite sure.

Therefore the slight width adjustment would create a slight height adjustment as well. That's what my tire guy has told me.

285's are really made for rims that are 9.5 or 10 inches wide, they might fit but they aren't made for a rim that wide

yeah the ride height may be a lil higher but it shouldn't be much taller at all, if it did affect the speedo it would probably only be off very slightly

Speedo won't matter, you're nuts regardless for running that small of a tire on an 11.

Don't come crying when you blow em out.

GSD3s are wide but I would think thats still a stretch.

But if you do decide to go the 285 route you will not have to recalibrate your speedo.

FYI: For a 285-40-17
285 = width in millimeters (duh)
40 = aspect ratio (sidewall is 40% as large as the width)
17 = rim diameter (another duh)

Stock Tire Diameter = 25.661"
285-40-17 = 25.976"

.3" will not effect your computer enough to cause any kind of problem.

I been running them since November of 06 and I have put alot of miles on them, to the point I cant accurately tell you how many and never had a problem.

I'd still put 315's on them...that's what I have on my 11's....isn't that the whole point of getting 11's?

It doesn't matter that you haven't had any trouble so far, eventhough it's been quite a while already, but you should really follow a tire manufacturers advice and follow their suggestions for wheel width. Just because nothing has happened so far doesn't mean it's safe to use tires that small on a wheel that wide. I'd definitely upgrade to 315s dude.

But yeah, to answer your question, you won't have to worry about the increased tire height of the 285s when it comes to your speedo.

I didnt want to go 315 on the GSD3s because They will stick out past the fender and I wanted a flush look.

They won't stick out past the fender if you have the right offset. There's a guy on here with a red '96 SS with 17 x 11 ZR1's in the rear and GS-D3 315's, its completely flush with the fender.

You must only weekend drive to get 2yrs out of your tires. I go thru a set a year & weather this tire runs a little wider or not, a 285 is not meant for a 11" wide wheel no matter what you think. Sorry.

For a 11" wide wheel you need a 315 to fit properly. Now if the tire runs a little wider maybe a 305 in this specific tire would be very close to some 315's but a 285 isn't even close.

Exclamation

Good grief people do your research before you spew so much misinformation . . .

A 285/40ZR17 will fit a 9.5" to a 11" wide wheel . . . PER THE MANUFACTURERS!

Therefore is it PERFECTLY safe and acceptable to do it . . .

A 285/40ZR17 is 26" tall vrs a 275/40ZR17 at 25.7" tall . . . the difference is negligable, so I really see no point in spendning the money to reprogram the speedo . . .

Xsta Z 28,

I was just wondering at what point you need to recalibrate. Thats all.

And yes, the 285 tire is fine on an 11 inch rim. I might have to take some pictures and show you guys the fitment.

Oh damn, I just double checked, even a 275/40/17 GS D3 is acceptable on a 11" wheel.

Sorry, for not doing my homework before posting and just working off memory.

No worries! its just that yea when you see the size posted you think no way, but the GSD3s are some wide tires man.
