If you are building a car from the ground up, choosing a narrower rear axle and deep offset lip actually increases performance. They aren't always about appearance only. Think of it this way, a wheel of any given width weighs exactly the same regardless if it has a 1" lip or a 6" lip. But, when you narrow the rear axle you save weight on axle ends being a few inches shorter, the internal axles being shorter. That reduction in axle width also reduces rotating mass. Also, moving the face of the wheel towards the middle of the wheel increases rigidity of the wheel from an engineering standpoint. It balances the stiffness of the outer hoop on both sides of the wheel.
