Its just the DRs that run really narrow. I bought a set of 555s in 315/35-17 and they were an inch wider than their DRs of the same size (had a set in my garage to compare to). 555s measured a little over 12" wide.

Here's old style BFG KD tread 315/35/17. Measured 13.2" at the tread with a tape measure so I don't know how accurate that is.

I just put a set of nittos 335-30-18 drs on my vette and they are wide as hell.

Well 335s are a wide tire.
