Question Nittos are Cracking

I have a set of nittos 315/35/17 555DR's and on the sidewall there are cracks going up into the tread. The cracks range from 1" to 3" inches. I called nitto and they are going to replace them. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?

Somebody posted a thread claiming the sidewall of one of their Nitto's ripped apart completely. It wasn't too long ago so you can check that out. Whether or not it was some kind of mistaken that was made by the owner or not, it still sucks. What size wheel did you mount the wheel on?

They should be mounted on a 10.5 or wider rim. Theres the problem.

I had the same problem..but mine were 275's and they were on the correct size rim(9inch)...Nitto replaced them for me no charge......I think they cracked because of the tons of wheel hop I had...

I have a lot of wheel hop too. I never thought that could be the problem. Did you send them to nitto or did the dealer replace them?

i was thinking the same, maybe you need to heat cycle them nitto's suck in the cold weather feels like your riding on rock-tires from the flintstones.

maybe you should do some burnouts before sending them back so we can see some good videos

Do the tires have a defect or is it just bad rubber? What do you guys think?

I had this same problem with mine. They're the 275s mounted on factory 17x9" SS/ZR1 wheels. I have cracks in just about every one of the outer tread blocks on the left wheel. Fewer on the right side. I've had them since May '03 and have put maybe 3000 miles on them. One burnout, no races.

I thought it was just me, possibly some vandalism. But, I noticed 2 other cars at an event on Saturday with the same cracks in them. Glad I found this thread!

Same problem here, cracks on both 275's Nitto's. My girl is scared driving her SS because of that. LOL. By the way has anyone heard of them busting while driving? Just making sure, plus it'll make her feel better.
SAY "NO" 2 CRACK? LOL.

I would call nitto and tell them what is going on, and they will repalce them. Thats what I did.
