my old 96 WS6 wasa 6 speed and had 4.11 gears..i did a 2300 RPM cluch dump on DR's at the track and my LT1 made maybe 300 RWHP at the time and my 10 bolt went KAA BLUUEEYY!!..and when it boke it locked up everything in the rear while the engine itselt was still trying to go and it cused me to twist my driveshaft nearly in half

now on my current procharged SS that makes over 500 RWHP ..has a bilt 4L60E with a stall and alot of other goodies..my 10 bolt lasted me well into the low 11's and as well as cutting many 1.6 60ft times..but i found a great deal on a Moser 12 bolt so i jumped all over it!

Rebuilt 10 bolt twice (pinion walked) maybe 100 runs with 1.5 60ft. Autos are easier on 10 bolts but they wont last long on a sticky tire drag racing. Save yourself a tow and upgrade to a 9inch or 12bolt.

The ring & pinion gears are usually the first to go. Then the axles. The reason a 9" is so much better is because the teeth on the gears are thicker. You're comparing a 7.5" diameter circle to a 9" with the same amount of teeth. So each tooth will be that much thicker based on the ratio of the diameters. Going to a 9" you will also have larger axles with, once again, thicker (and in most cases, more) teeth on the spline.

What this guy said ^. 9" or 12 bolt. Most people I know with auto's are fine with 12 bolts, and the guys that a bit more tough on the rear end with manuals perfer a 9"
