Painting your tires, hmmm.......I'll wait to see your results

I don't think it'll work because the tire rubber shrinks, expands and doesnt have an overall solid basic for a coat of paint but you never know.

Are you painting white the white letters?

That's the idea. Remember though before anyone freaks out - this is for my 1963 Corvette Grand Sport which is supposed to have white lettered tires. Unfortunately Good Year doesn't make a 17" or 18" tires with white letters. My idea is to paint the existing black lettering but I need something that will adhere and remain flexible. I wonder what kind of paint they use on race rubber where the logo is entirely painted on.

I've actually done it (and got it to work) on my '02 SS with the stock 275/40/17 tires. Going with a fatter profile will DEFINITELY help - the biggest problem I had was where the radial hit the ground, the bottom profile would "pooch" out, so the letters would be stretched and released in one rotation. As you can expect, it was difficult to get them not to crack to pieces at 70+ mph.

When mine worked:

1. Took laquer thinner to the letters (to clean them and give a good painting/bonding surface)

2. Used "Bond Aid" from Advance auto to help bond the paint to the tire.

3. Applied 2-3 light coats of paint (the most flexible latex paint I could find) to the letters to get them as white as possible. You can also use rubberized paint, but I couldn't find it in anything less than 5-gallon buckets.

___________________________

However, you CAN get either Goodyear or BF Goodrich to make custom raised white-letter tires for you - you just have to talk to the right people. A guy at the performance shop I take my car to called and confirmed it - and if I was going to do it again, I'd try to get the custom tires from Goodyear or BFG. Painting them is a pain, and they'll start to discolor and show hairline cracks over time. I eventually used laquer thinner to take my white letters off.

Good luck though!

Didn't somebody actually make/sell a paint "marker" for that specific reason?

I realize that it's not much help but at least you might want to search a little for that (i.e "tire, marker")

Maybe I'm thinking of this type of thing >>>
One from Jegs

Don't know if that would work but maybe they're worth a shot (or you could outright ask somebody. like the manufacturer)

Aren't those pens from Jegs pretty much designed to touch up or brighten existing white letters? Aren't they a big grease pencil or something?

Andy, you know what I'm up to. Do you think they'll work or should I keep looking?

Maybe. I used to have a pen like that. I wonder if I still have it.

Precision wise it will suck, but I know you have creative was of masking and templating.

It may work - I'd look at the auto parts store or even Wally Mart, they sell things like it.

What about paint for interior vinyl, I would think it was designed to flexible?
