Default Nitto 555 vs NT05

I am wondering if anyone out there has run both tires.

What was the difference in grip (both off the line and in the corners), tire noise, trad life and anything else you want to add.

I'm kind of torn on which way to go. My car is not a daily driver. It is mostly a street car that will see some 1/4 mile and HPDE-type action.

Thanks in advance.

I had Nitto NT555s. For a street tire, they gripped pretty well. They could be a little noisy at high speed (90+ MPH).

For road course use, though, I wouldn't use either of these tires. F-bodies are relatively heavy cars. The NT555s won't hold up to the abuse, and the NT05s will get greasy from the heat after a few laps and lose grip. NT-01s would be your best choice.

The NT-555 is a full tread depth performance tire with a 300 treadwear rating. The NT-05 is a reduced tread depth max performance street tire with a 200 treadwear rating. In this case treadwear is directly comparable as they are the same manufacturer. NT-05 should provide greater dry traction, less treadlife, and decreased wet performance. I only drive my car a couple thousand miles a year in the nice weather. NT-05 would be a no brainer for me.

I disagree on the NT-05, too much air pressure causes the greasy stuff.

They like low pressure, I start the session with 31F/26R.

I have pulled 1.4G on these tires in a 4000 lb streetcar on track, It can pull more but my ***** that are attached to my brain won't let me just yet.

My buddy run 1:43's at Road Atlanta on these tires in a 3350lb 450rwhp 99 Camaro.I run 1:54's at Road Atlanta(my first time there)

NT 05 is a KILLER tire once you learn what it likes.

How much pressure do they like? I know the 555Rs like 25 psi and do the NT05s need a long burnout like the 555Rs do?

NT-05 is not a drag tire, it is a road course style tire.

Gentlemen (Ladies?),

Thanks for the replies. I ended up buying the NT-05s for the car since it is a weekend warrior. I've had them on the car for just over 2 weeks now. All I can say is DAMN.

I'm setting my car up for taking turns and these things flat out stick. On/off ramps, bring them on. Turn in is crisp, clean and feels great. The ride even improved over the BFG g-Force sports which were on the car when I bought it. Road noise...what road noise. Color me impressed.

I even went from a 15mph roll tonight just to see if they would hook in 60* temps. They flat out hooked and no nasty wheel spin on the 1~>2 shift, just hook up and keep going. I am telling you, if you want an all out tire without going R compound, these tires kick *** and take names.

The NT05’s stick greatly, point the car in the direction your aiming and holding true is very confidence inspiring with these tires. I would honestly have to say a notch above some of the best tires I have tried. Grip is definitely noticeable and in general the NT05’s give you a great overall sense of “hugging” the street.

I then went to a remote road section and was able do switch backs and overly aggressive grip U-turns in order to see if I could feel or loose the NT05’s and was able to do so, but only on wildly aggressive maneuvers so in my book they preformed amazing. The sidewalls held great and I can’t say these tires are a hard sidewall but they are definitely not soft. I did specifically try to rim check with these tires going over horrible protruding railroad crossings and I was never able to hit wheel so the sidewalls held up great. Comfort level was great and never any harsh shock or jerk to prove otherwise.

Highway driving is smooth, quiet and effortless, there is no “humm” or “burr burr burr” sound while cruising. Lane changes over uneven road/highway surfaces were smooth and clean, no sudden jerks or stiff sidewalls pulling one way or the other. There were no loud sounds or noticeable unwanted steering wheel pull/vibrations. I was able to drive on both asphalt and concrete sectional highway surfaces when testing the NT05’s.

I was able to track (Autocross) the NTO5’s and was happy with them and never once lost confidence on where I was pointing or where I wanted to go………grip was evident through out the entire event on the front mounted NT05’s.

My wet weather assessment consist of about 25 percent of the time over dry daily driving:

I did get to briefly test the NT05’s in wet weather daily driving. They did defiantly perform well. I will admit they are amazing in dry conditions, yet they are nearly as awesome in wet. I use the word “nearly” purposely to ensure everyone knows that they are a better dry tire. I was able to maintain grip in mild speed u-turns, faster main road exits and off ramps. It took aggressive driving for them to loose grip.

I find that more than acceptable since that type of driving shouldn’t be done and was honestly asking for trouble. However, I figured for me I want to know the limits and aimed to push them regardless. Overall I drive responsibly in wet and have no problem or worry daily driving NT05’s __________________ 98 TA A4 3.42 315/35/17,mti air lid,k&N,airbox cutout, smooth bellows,tb by pass, ported tb,ls6 intake,!egr,!air,!cat, hooker headers,160 Tstat, crank pully, custom dual 3 1/2 exhaust,Lca,panhard, front & rear sway bars,Bmr springs,Koni 4/4.TA girdle,b&m deep tranny pan & cooler,Tune by Frost.

I also run the 315/35R17 on my 2002 Z28. No clearance problems but they do run about the width of a gnats *** to the bump stops.
