Default Wheel rub issue

I have a wheel rub issue in the rear. I have 18x10.5 rear c6 replica wheels with 18 285 35 tires on them. When they went to put them on my 2002 formula firebird they said the fender and the bump stops were in the way. They stated I can cut the bump stops but they don't recommend it. They also said I can roll the fender which I was aware of and after watching the guy with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth realized it wasn't that hard. My question is can I cut the bump stops and if I can should I do anything to replace that safety feature? Does it even matter? Thank you very much for any advice

Remove the bump stop and be done with it. As long as you don't bottom out the car you will be fine. I removed mine last year and haven't had any issues whatsoever.

Should I change the springs or will the stock ones hold the car ?

Unless your springs are worn out, I would suggest no. The stock springs are fine for the rear, however you can change the front if you have a particular stance in mind. I would suggest changing the front struts and rear shocks for a better ride if you haven't already.

Don't remove your bump stops, jack the car up from the rear when installing the wheels. I removed my bump stops on a car about 7 yrs ago, and won't do it again.

I don't understand why you are rubbing with a 285/35? I ran that size for years, plenty of room. Back spacing correct on your rims?

Have the same issue. I bought C5 Z06 wheels (real ones) and have a feeling that the rear (18x10.5) will rub the bump stop with the tire on. Is there a way around this? without removing or relocating the bump stop.

285's rub? my 335's don't rub unless i jack the car up off the frame and the axle drops down then they hit the bump stop. as for the outer fenders mine do rub a little but only over big bumps or hard cornering because i still have to install my new swaybar links

Thanks for all the advice. I shaved the bump stops a little. The firebirds bump stops are in a different spot than the trans ams. II am not sure why, but someone who has a trans am saw mine and commented that theirs are in a different spot.

I wouldn't recommend removing your bump stops. I had some rubbing issues as well so I had my buddy install some longer ARP wheel studs (#7708), I added a spacer and rolled the fender lips.
