I just picked up a set of chrome ZR1's for pretty cheap but I would like to get them done in black is it possible to get them painted or should I get them powdercoated?

Maybe it's just me, but they would probably look better chrome than black

If they've been mounted before, they will have to be grit blasted first or the powder coating will chip in the bead area. I know, a buddy of mine already went through it. Something in the soapy solution they use at the tire shop will keep the powder coating from sticking. If you paint them, you'll be sorry. They'll chip like a crumbling cookie in time. Powder coating is the way to go. It's very durable.

I wouldn't paint over the chrome. I would have that removed, or trade them to someone with silver. I'm sure most would trade without asking too many questions. Unless the chrome is pitted, or flaking off, that would be SUCH a waste of a nice wheel.

Yes powder coating is the best way to go for wheels.

I does not matter if the wheels have been mounted before though. The place that powder coats them should clean them with a very strong cleaning solution first. This will strip anything off the metal and make it an ideal surface for the coating.

That said not sure if they can strip the chrome off, or if it can be coated over.

That's funny mine haven't chipped in two+ years

But yes powder coating is really the better way to do them. In my case they could not gaurantee the "two/tone" effect would work (coating with the silver and then black) and to have them polished and then coated was just wayyy too time and cost prohibitive.

I would'nt paint over chrome.....Get them powdercoated. Painting th 10 spokes(looks good by the way) painting an alluminum wheel is ok, and obviously it has bee proven, as long as it is done right can be done....etched primed, primed again, painted and the place probably used a flex additive(mainly used for plastics) is a little more forgiving. Eventually everything is going to chip. I think the factory silver wheels are just clearcoated....I will have to get back to you on that one.

if you do it right paint hold up quite well. the hades and most inprotent part is preparing the metal. you want to remove all contaminants from metal. sand or bead blast. then etch, then prime twice. and paint. i used an industrial grade paint. i cant find a chip after three years. i have to warn you though..........you'll be cleaning black every day. does not look good with any brake dust on it.
.........tk 14 ss.....those look hot!!!
