Best street tires for 300hp?
I'm buying new tires for my '98 Z28 and I'm wanting the best bang for my buck. My current tires are 245/45/17 and they're so old and bald that I can spin them at 60 mph when I only run around 300hp.
I was looking at Nitto NT05s but I want opinions. If possible I'd like to go like 500$-600$ a set but if not I can go to like 900$ a set.

Will I still spin them if I gun it in first? Because all I really need are tires that will allow me to give it gas without spinning everywhere. What model Toyos do you use?

Chad,
I have Toyo Proxy 4 on all 4 corners of my 2000 Trans Am (275/40/17). I love these tires. They hook pretty well and tread life seems pretty good even after 4,000 miles. Pricey at $200-220 each though. (may be less $ for 245s though)

What mods do you have on the car now? that makes a big difference. A 3200-4000 stall car will have a great chance at spinning any tire on the street but a stock stall car can dead hook sometimes on any street... it all depends...especially on gearing as well.
When my TA was stock, 2.73 gears, I could go wot off idle and dead hook with hard 275 tires in the rain until about 3000 rpm and it would break loose abit. Then sometimes at 70mph top second gear, it break loose in damp conditions for some unknown reason.. same tires different road surface. really shocked me to see that.
With 3200 stall, i'd roast 1st gear if not careful. I went to 555R drag radials and it was better. With NT05R's it was dead hooking at low rolls when warmed up. With 3.73 gears I get abit more spin but still can dead hook first gear rolls in the dry.
Regular NT05's are nice and really soft. They wont last very long tho, especially fronts if you dont keep up with alignment and do alot of turning. Edges wear out quick. My drag radials however are freakish...over 11K miles and still going strong and hooking like crazy at the track. I'm probably gonna buy them again but THEY ARE SCARY IN THE RAIN. Dont listen to anyone who says they are fine in the rain. They obviously have never driven a good rain tire. Over 40mph in any kind of medium to heavy rain is sketchy at best. You have to be careful with the drag radials.
For you, just about any high performance summer type tire with tread wear rating under 220 should work extremely well. My 295/30/19 bridgestones on my Irocz can hook mid 500's whp fairly well. Much over that they spin but for a 19" tire with no sidewall, they are sick. RE050's
