Default Is there 2 different size knurls on wheel studs???

I'm putting in longer wheel studs due to having to use wheel spacers for my brembo brake install.

The studs I got have a knurl on them that are ~12.9mm (0.509") but it looks like the stock studs have a 12.73mm (0.495")knurl.

I looked into the ARP's and they also have a larger knurl on them. So how are people getting them seated? Should I open up the holes in the hub?

The reason I ask is because it is nearly impossible to get the studs in at this point.

Funny you ask, Im replacing a few studs tomorrow. The new ones are in the freezer as I type this. The ones I took out are .505" and the ones going in (Dorman) are .529"... I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

See, that's the thing, the ones that came out measured 12.73mm and the ones I bought were 12.88-12.90mm depending on how hard I squeezed the caliper. I'm taking the hub and studs to my machinist and using his press to press them in. I think my old studs left the knurls behind in the hub hence why they are a smaller diamter, you can barely feel any knurling on them.

Put 'em in the freezer overnight - I'll know for sure tomorrow but the guy that told me about that trick is a ASE cert mechanic and swears it'll shrink by .030"

Oh, and I'll be installing them with washers and a nut

so i have a question, i am also changing out my studs (front and back) to acomidate spacers for my Brembo brake upgrade. i was looking at the ARP 12x20x3.5 studs:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/arp-100-7703

Summit told me that i could just press out my old ones and these will fit right in the stock parts. is this true? i have a stock 10-bolt and stock hubs up front. i will also be using closed style acorn lugnuts (same style as stock).

Nope, the Dormans didnt work - even with an impact, they wouldnt go much farther than .125" from the knurled part. Took them back for stock replacements which are currently in the freezer. You may have better luck with a press

i am gonna go to NAPA tomorrow and pick up a stock 12mm stud and a 1/2 x 20 stud of the same style as the ARP and compare them. i have a stock busted hub laying around here somewhere that i can attempt to press in to it. then i will know if i can go with them.

i just dont want to spend $130+ on 12mm long ARP studs when i can get bigger 1/2" studs for $50, and they are stronger. so if they fit, it is order time. hopefully someone else has gotten these to fit cause i really want to get my new brakes on. they look so sad sitting in the garage on the shelf waiting to be put on.

I'm going to use some sandpaper on my hub holes to just clean them up a little first, then try pressing in the studs, we'll see what happens.

Good to know. I've decided to take the hubs off and go to my machinist who has a 40 and 60 ton press. That should work.

When I replaced the moser studs on my 12 Bolt I had a shop install the new ones on their press. I tried pulling one through on my own with a old nut and spacer and it was a b!tch to do.

I'm hoping to get mine pressed in today. I had tried the lugnut method, but didn't feel comfortable after the lug nut started to show signs of abuse, so I stopped. Pressing them in from the rear is definitely the way to go.

A regular lugnut?

You should be using a grade 8 nut with 2-3 large washers to act as bearings

Well, the studs and hubs are at the machinist, he'll get them to fit. If need be, he'll open up the holes in the hubs by the slightest amount then press in the studs.

Once I get them back tomorrow, I'll be able to complete the big brake kit and start bleeding the brakes.

He used a press, and said they didn't start moving till almost 4tons of pressure, and some didn't fully seat till 6tons of force.

I know I know... right now I'm trying to get a 4y/o and 5y/o ready for bed after a long work day/week. I was at work at 5am today, worked till 4:30, then worked out afterwards, got home, and have been dealing with kids due to my wife finishing up stuff for her work.

It's tough juggling two careers and two kids and finding time to finish car stuff.
