Those cars have vastly different suspension geometry with a lot more travel, and a lot less unprung weight than us. They were designed from the factory for those wheels, we were not and will suffer for it.
All the road racers go no bigger than 18s (most on 17x11s all around), try talking them into 19s and 20s...

I will put my 17s against your 19" and 20" rims and tires on a road course any day. BTW I have out run GTRs on a road course by several seconds with mine.
Also if your theory is correct, real race cars will run low profile rubber bands if they want good handling. Right?
BTW, the ZR1 rear tire is over an inch taller than 4th Gen tires as well.
Lets compare the tire and rims sizes on say your ZR1 mentioned vs a C6R.
http://www.corvetteracing.com/2012-specifications.shtml
ZR1 19 x 10 (front); 20 x 12 (rear)
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 2,
P285/30ZR19 (front),
P335/25ZR20 (rear)
(front)25.8" tall, so a 3.4" side wall.
(rear)26.8" tall, so a 3.4" side wall.
C6R 18 x 12.5 (front); 18 x 13 (rear)
Michelin racing tires,
30/68-18 (front)
31/71-18 (rear)
(front) 26.8 tall, so a 4.4" side wall
(rear) 28" tall, so it has 5" side wall
My 17s only have a 4.3" side wall. I would never run bigger than an 18 on these cars. IMO, I like to have a chance to win.
As a bonus, the 09 Viper
(front) 25.3", 18" rim, so a side wall of 3.65"
(rear) 26.8", 19" rim, so a side wall of 3.90"
If you are running a 20" with the same stock diameter on our car you will have a side wall of 2.8", not one of the cars above go anywhere near that small, and the fastest is in the 4"-5" range.
We have not even mentioned the bent rim and bruised side walls on the street with these rubber bands.
Yes a well designed suspension can make a lower profile tire work pretty well, but the only reason they go that big is to get more brake in there, it is not for the handling. It is also why they typically go to a taller tire to offset that.

In reality, MOST of the people on this forum don't use their cars for those purposes.

with the rims being black, they didn't look like a true 20. I actually liked the look of the 20, but i'm sure it handles better, goes better, and feels better on the road now. A 17 zr1 wheel (in my opinion) is a very boring wheel for a trans am. I would agree with some other statements that a 19 inch wheel is the most you would want to go for the trans am, but the 20's were a bit more unique and fit the car a bit better in my opinion. maybe do a matte black lip with a yellow pin stripe on the zr1's? regardless, the car looks awesome
