My review, MT vs 555R for guys on the strip.
Hey guys.
After reading the forums, I made the call to buy a set of Nittro 555R Drag Radials for my Camaro. I planned on driving with them to the track 3 times a month, and around town on weekends.
First weekend out, they did OK at best. I did get 1- 1.81 60' time, a few low 1.9s, and some 2.0's mixed it. They always semed to have a chirp leaving, so I know they were not hooked up 100%. Sometimes it would chirp more then others.
Second weeked out, by the time I left the track, I thought my car was broken. I even posted about it. The car would not hook at all. It was 1.95 60' on one pass, to an arms crossed sideways 2.10 60'. I tried everything. Pressure up, pressue down. Big burnout, little burnout. Did not make any difference. It was impossible to bracket race becasue I never knew what the car was going to do.
Even though the only had 500 miles on them, and 20 passes on the strip, I said screw it and ordere some Mickey Thompson drag radials for last weekend. I could not take the headache any longer.
Well sure as heck, I did a medium burnout, and WOW did these thing grab. I hooked up perfect to a 1.75 60' my best by a ton. The 330' picked up even more. My best 1/8 before was 8.42 and I ran 8.30 with the M/T's. I was solid 1.75-1.77 60' every pass. Same temp, same air pretty much as the other weekends.
I know some people have good luck and better 60' times with the Nitto tires, but I just had to make a post from my experience.

Depends on the amount of tire left really, a new nitto will outhook a old MT. But obviously a softer compound will always hook better.
The general consensus is that Nittos are great all around street tires, while MT's are optimum for traction in straight lines only and they wear out alot faster.
If your only running 8.4 1/8th mile times, then either will work for you.

I had terribly inconsistent 60 fts also with Nittos. I did cut a best of 1.69 with a dead hook on a 3200 converter with lots of 1.70s also. But they were hit and miss and inconsistent for a stock suspension car. With nothing suspension related changed, and more power, I can cut a 1.5x 19 outta 20 times with an ET street. The tire just plain works.
