Default Recommend me a 315-35-17 for the street.

Right now I've got some slick Sumitomo HTRZs on my Trans Am and from the get go they have never had any amount of traction even at 60 plus mph. Since these tires are gone now I'm looking for a street tire to take their place. What would be a good traction tire that won't wear out in 2k miles. I very seldom drive in the rain and the car might see 2k miles a year. I've been reading on some mustang sites about the NT555R drag radial lasting 10-20k miles. I run Hoosier QTPs at the track so I just need something that will hold the car from 50-60 rolls and last a while. What do you guys recommend?

The Nittos can last a while. I'd also look into the R888s.

The R888s will grip as well if not better, handle the rain well, and provide more lateral grip due to the fact that its a road race tire.

Be prepared. It howls big time.

The Kumho Ecsta XS has a lot of dry grip. These should hook up well and last longer than the R888. The R888 are good if your looking for very high grip levels but they will wear quickly.

What about the NT555Rs, do they howl? Which with the exhaust and the 9" making noise it probably won't matter much anyway.

TireRack doesn't sell Nitto. Although I'm glad to see they are finally selling Toyo (parent company of Nitto).

NT555Rs will be a good tire. They aren't a huge step up from a street tire, but will work.

The Kumhos will have better lateral grip, but not as much straightline. It's an actual road tire, not a DOT drag radial.

Personally, the NT05R from Nitto is what I would run in a 315/35-17 or the Toyo Proxes TQ. Both are wider and provide more grip in a streetable tire than the NT555R. The NT05R will wear faster and the TQs will wear similar to the NT555Rs but with more grip and a wider tire. The NT555R runs narrow in a 315.

The other option is Mickey Thompson. It'll outgrip all of them, but has some issues with balancing properly and being a good trooper around corners. The other tires you can drive around normally without any issues.

And if you wanted a 28" tall tire, the M&H Racemaster Drag Radial in a 325/45-17 is my choice. It's a step above all the other tires in every category (grip, streetability, rain) but wears pretty quickly.
